Timeout for the Viscult Festival in 2020
The Viscult Ethnographic Film Festival will take a timeout in 2020. The festival has been organized annually since 2001 in Joensuu, Finland. The festival’s positive development during the recent years culminated in the four-day event, Viscult–NAFA 2019 – Cultural Connections, organized jointly with the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) in October 2019. The festival also accommodated the Visual Anthropology of the North research project and their workshops.
The 2019 festival was successful in many ways, including a record number of participants. The organizing of the 2019 festival was a demanding task. It also consumed the resources of the small organizing group to the extent that the organizers have now decided to rest and recover during 2020. There are, however, plans for thematic film screenings in 2020, to be announced later. The Viscult Ethnographic Film Festival is organized by the North Karelia Regional Film Association together with the Karelia University of Applied Sciences Media Studies and the School of Humanities at the University of Eastern Finland.
