NOORA VIKMAN & ELINA HYTÖNEN-NG
LISTENING TO MOVIES
THURSDAY 26.10. at 12:30
In this workshop, we focus on listening to films. Is it possible to concentrate on one sense only and for how long? We’ll analyse the soundscape and the ways music is used in a 30-minute-long documentary Danusa’s Mara, chosen specially from the point of ear. After watching the film on the spot, we will share experiences based on our perceptions of the film and apply also concepts, models and approaches used in the film music research. How do these choices support or comment the 2017 Viscult theme, autonomy? You only need your ears to participate and no special knowledge about the subject will be necessary.
The workshop will be held in English.
Noora Vikman is an ethnomusicologist and soundscape research working as a senior lecturer of musicology in the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu. Active consuming of movies and dreaming about making documentary films belong to her past but she is still fascinated by the mystery of motion picture atmospheres which calls her to pause in front of the film screen.
Elina Hytönen-Ng is a docent of ethnomusicology (University of Turku) and a university researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu. During the years she has taught lectures about film music and the history of jazz, to name a few topics. She finds it intriguing to observe the ways in which the sound and music is used in the story telling.
