Romanipuhtautta / Roma Purity

In the film, a Roma woman from eastern Finland tells about the cleanliness customs in housekeeping, doing laundry etc. The woman's story and situation are concrete, but they finely reveal deeper meanings that are hidden in the traditions of purity and impurity of the Roma culture. One must do that naturally. In the story, she refers often to the cleanliness of the face, concretely meaning that the face cloth has to be washed completely separate from other laundry and it has to be kept in a clean place, not in the bathroom. One must also keep one's face clean symbolically, if a Roma hears or sees something impropriate; they must turn their head, cover their eyes or leave. These customs are a part of the core of Roma culture and vary in different clans and even families. "Roma Purity" is unique in its portrayal of the Roma of Finland, whose purity traditions are very particular and well kept.
