The Finnish ethnographic film festival, Festival of Visual Culture, will celebrate its fourth anniversary in October of this year. Also known as the Finnish ‘sister festival’ of the Nordic Anthropological Film Association’s (NAFA) festival, the Festival of Visual Culture will return to its home of Joensuu, Finland after enjoying a successful event in Petrozavodsk, Russia in 2003.

Through the co-operation of the Arts Council of North Karelia in Joensuu and the Ministry of Culture in Russian Karelia, last year’s festival (for review, click here) and its cross-border reality helped to spawn the idea for this year’s theme:

Borders, the physical and cultural barriers between people and nations

The Festival of Visual Culture is an intimate event, one in which the majority of filmmakers are present to introduce their work, offering an informal environment where the opportunity for profound discussions of the films is encouraged.

The festival historically attracts a crowd of over one thousand people and is proud to increase the size and awareness of the festival, the films and the message of the filmmakers by streaming all content - films and discussions alike - on the Internet.

Film content will focus on ethnographic, anthropological and documentary films. Student films will also be welcomed. This event is open to all interested persons.

With permission, all films and subsequent interviews will be streamed live on the Internet.

The Festival of Visual Culture is an event made possible through the co-operation of the MECCA and Cadimef-studios, East Finland Film Commission, Joensuu University and North Karelian Polytechnic.
