Information in Brief

The purpose of the North Karelian Regional Film Association is to promote film (audiovisual) culture, media upbringing and all kinds of education that supports this in North Karelia. The aim is to improve general opportunities to work within the film scene in the province. The purpose of the Association is not to make profit.

In order to fulfil its aims the Association:

- organises film events, discussions and educational events
- supports research, informing and publishing related to film culture
- makes initiatives to different authorities
- cooperates with local schools, institutes and the university
- cooperates with other organisations in Finland and abroad
- creates contacts between different organisations and also works as a link between them

Activities

Measured by audience, film is the most popular form of art in the world!

The Association maintains and develops film culture.
Locally we work to increase schools’ activity to take pupils to see films as a part of media education (Koulukino-project that is funded by the Ministry of Education). We also support the education of multiculturalism and tolerance in the primary schools of North Karelia, as well as arrange and develop media camps for the youth.

As North Karelia is located near the Russian border and Russian Karelia, it is natural that we cooperate with the Republic of Karelia both the ministerial and the grass root level. Examples are amateur video festival in Petrozavodsk and films of Joensuu film makers in Joensuu Day. Also the third Festival of Visual Culture was held in Petrozavodsk from September 25th to 28th in 2003 together with Karelkinoprokat.

The Association is also coordinating a documentary film and documentation project about Fenno-Americans in Russian Karelia in the 1930s. The project is done with several Karelian and Finnish partners.

Our task is also to organise different events that are linked to different themes, such as Kalevala Day.

The Festival of Visual Culture (www.viscult.net) has also been a success. The first two years this international festival of ethnographic, anthropologic and documentary films was held in Joensuu and was well-received among the acknowledged professionals of the genres. The technical support of Joensuu Science Park has enabled to stream most films and lectures live in the Internet.
